Home Movies

after watching jonas mekas’ home movies for the first time, the line between where life ends and cinema begins became blurred for me. so i decided to look for an answer and grabbed the lumix digital compact camera my mother gave me on my 9th birthday. since the screen panel is broken, I cannot see what I am filming at that moment, and I entirely rely on my instincts to decide what to film.

the roads back home (2025)

my search for what “home” really means began when i moved to istanbul for university. between the looming threat of an expected earthquake and the desire to turn my student apartment into a so-called “home”, i spent years suspended between rootlessness and belonging. this film is made up of home videos from those years. its main thread follows the footage i shot during my return to istanbul to collect my belongings after i had to leave suddenly for Ankara because of an effective earthquake, just weeks before my graduation. like henri bergson’s concept of time, the film doesn’t follow a linear flow. instead, it is haunted by the ghosts of memories whose echoes blur the lines between past and present. shortly after this event, i moved out of what had been my very first “home” – my shell that let the wind in and the sun through, my place of dreams and nightmares. this film is my first answer to this ongoing search for what “home” really means.
